Rotary International Regional Membership Officer
WHAT WOULD YOUR IDEAL ROTARY CLUB LOOK LIKE?
First, picture the members: what talents or skills would they
possess, what attitude would they carry and how would they
engage with each other? Next, picture the community: how would
you want your club to be viewed, what local issues would you want
to tackle and what events would excite your members? Last, picture
your club meetings: what would you do to make them more fun?
Would you change the meeting structure, invite family or perhaps
try a new venue?
Membership starts at the club level, so examining your club
experience and letting the members express their ideas can really
strengthen your club. The new Rotary International publication,
Membership Assessment Tools, contains six different assessments
to add value to your club, including a Membership Satisfaction
Survey (found in the section Enhancing The Club Experience). This
assessment can help clubs identify what members enjoy in their
club experience, what they’d like to change and can inform an action
plan to move towards a more enjoyable club experience. Be sure to
make the survey fun! Members who complete the survey could be
entered into a raffle, or there could be a prize for the most innovative
meeting idea, event or project.
It’s a crucial time for membership in Rotary. As your Rotary
International regional membership officer, I work with a
knowledgeable and enthusiastic team of zone and district
volunteers to support the continued growth and retention of Rotary’s
greatest asset – our members. My job is to inform Rotary leaders
about current membership resources, explain how they can be used
to attract and engage members and get feedback on existing or

Many Rotary policies and processes have stood the test of time,
however, the 2016 Council on Legislation recently accepted change
is required to allow for shifts in lifestyle that have occurred over the
years. No longer can many people find the time to attend a weekly
dinner meeting, then devote more time assisting with other projects
to fulfil Rotary’s aim to Do Good in the World. We are time poor, with
24/7 expectations on us. Rotary needs to allow for this if it wishes to
retain and attract members.
As a result, the Council on Legislation made changes surrounding
club operations and membership. They have agreed that clubs need
the flexibility to do things differently, in a manner that is right for
The Rotary International Board, being committed to such changes,
put forward two proposals to increase flexibility of meetings. The
first allowed for clubs to decide whether they wanted to meet online
or in person. Providing clubs meet twice a month, the Board believed
this was appropriate. The second provided for flexibility in choosing
membership rules and requirements, which would allow clubs to be
structured in a manner tailored to their members.
Other changes approved include simplifying who can be a Rotarian.
There is now a simple requirement that a member be of good
character, have a good reputation in their community and be willing
to serve their community.
Also eliminated is the distinction between e-clubs and traditional
clubs, allowing clubs the flexibility to meet in a variety of ways.
Rotary International’s strong commitment to membership was
further reinforced as its top internal priority, resulting in the
establishment of a standing committee for membership with
investment in resources that are localised throughout the world.
Support is available both from Rotary International’s head office
in Evanston, with Julie Aubry as your key resource, as well as by
your regional representatives based in Australia and New Zealand.

International director and member of the Membership Committee
