The Rotary Club of Holdfast Bay, SA, has been
supporting another iconic community service
organisation committed to providing safe
beaches, developing its people and ensuring
better communities. For a number of years
the Rotary club has been developing a close
association with the Somerton Surf Life Saving
Club (SSLC) in the form of new lifesaving
equipment, education and training resources
and financial support where appropriate.
Surf Life Saving is a volunteer organisation
with some 310 clubs nationally and around
165,000 members, with 40 per cent of these
members being part of the junior education
and development program. In encouraging
these juniors into senior ranks as a youth
member aged 13 to 18, the SSLC has been
focusing on this transition process with YIPs.
This does not relate to those golfers reading
this article, but refers to the Youth Involvement
Program within Surf Life Saving.
Basically YIPs provides youth members with
a structured rewards program to keep them
motivated and involved in Surf Life Saving,
while providing them with the opportunity
to explore and become involved in a range
of areas and activities they may not have
Leadership, community education, club
activities/administration are just a few
examples of YIPs. Every activity they get
involved with is translated into points or
surf creds, using a similar concept to that
of Rewards Points.
Maybe a Surf Life Saving Club near you has
the YIPs and it might be worth asking if they
need any help by supporting the program or
funding incentives or activities associated with
the program. It may also be worth exploring
the links with RYLA and RYPEN programs, as
the Rotary Club of Holdfast Bay has done with
the SSLC, or your local Rotaract club.
