their day on Sydney Harbour. The Sydney Convention Host Organising Committee is very
grateful to Commodore Frank Gardiner and members of the NSW Fleet of the International
Fellowship of Yachting Rotarians for the magnificent hospitality extended to this important
group of visitors from all parts of the Rotary world. Four boats were made available for the
day, hosted by Harry Dege, John Milne, Jim McDonald and Ray Wilson – all past
Commodores of the NSW Fleet.
Now is the time for Rotary clubs throughout the
regional to come up with ideas and plans for
special activities before, during and after
Such ideas MUST be submitted to PDG Greg
Muldoon and his Events Committee for
consideration – firstname.lastname@example.org – and the
scope is enormous.
• For example, the HOC is looking for ideas to
create something new and special with the
‘local hospitality night’. There are many
possibilities – from clubs ‘matching’ with
clubs from remote parts of Australia, New
Zealand and the islands, to hosting a night
on one of Sydney’s many harbour islands,
or to simply linking up with visitors for a
bus tour of Sydney’s night life. Greg and his
team want club leaders to come to them
• Nothing is yet planned for Sydney Harbour.
There is a big opening for a club or individual
Rotarians to organise a day on the most
famous harbour in the world!
• Perhaps there is potential for a night of
‘Baby Boomers’ Music’ nostalgia from the
50’s and 60’s?
• It may be a little cool in early June but
parties on Sydney’s famous beaches would
create plenty of interest among many
overseas visitors. What about a Guinness
Book of Records attempt on the largest
‘fish and chip banquet out of newspaper’
on Bondi Beach?
• Walking is a great past time among Rotarians
and The Blue Mountains, National Parks, and
water front areas offer many delightful
‘walks’, ie: the Spit Bridge to Manly.
• Partnerships with Rotary clubs in the
region’s developing island nations are also

have created a formidable team to stir support
for the Convention and especially The
Billabong House of Friendship.
Already – still more than 12 months out
from the event – there is more corporate
interest in Sydney than any other Convention
for many years.
The Billabong House of Friendship promises
to be an outstanding attraction and Rotary
International is considering allowing guests
one day passes for the Saturday prior to the
opening day on Sunday, June 1.
Quality music, wine and food, Rotary
project booths and commercial sales booths
for a variety of products will all provide

Angelo (firstname.lastname@example.org) are always
pleased to receive new offers and ideas.
Angelo is responsible for food, entertainment,
etc in ‘The Billabong’ whilst Harold will provide
information on sponsored booths.
However, Rotary clubs interested in
obtaining Booth space to promote their special
projects at the Convention should contact HOC

‘hot line’ to Deborah Kujbida at Rotary
International in Evanston, USA.
PROPOSALS, IDEAS from ROTARy CLUBS
The big news for March was the announcement
by HOC Events Committee Chairman Greg
Muldoon that Sydney Opera House has locked in
an ‘Evening with The Sydney Symphony
Orchestra’ for the night Monday, June 2. This
concert will cater for 2,500 Rotarians, partners
and friends and is certain to create plenty of

• A special Convention Australian Rules
premiership match at Skoda Stadium.
• A restaurant/fireworks night at Darling
• Special Home Stay programs in areas like The
Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and Canberra
immediately following the Convention.
• Local Hospitality Night – NOT the traditional
Convention ‘home hosting’ night.
SPONSORSHIP - BOOTH SPACE
HOC Promotion Chairman PDG Lloyd Roever was
heavily involved with a visit by the RI 2014 Convention
Promotion Committee in February and Sydney 2014
now has a world wide network of 30 plus experienced
Rotarians and partners in place ready to ‘sell Sydney’
as soon as we all say ‘farewell’ to Lisbon in June.
During discussions, members of the RI Promotion
Committee prepared their estimates on possible
attendances for Sydney and Lloyd was delighted to see
the final figure close to 25,000. All North American
representatives reported tremendous interest.
Lloyd is still looking for volunteers to help with the
promotion of Convention in some areas of Australia
and New Zealand. Interested people can contact Lloyd
The Promotion team is ready to ‘hit the road’ and
will be available to address Rotary Clubs, District
Conferences, Assemblies and other important events.
Lloyd’s special plea is that Rotarians around
Australia and New Zealand spare no effort in lobbying
their friends in distant places to put Sydney 2014 on
their ‘must do’ list.

All visitors were very impressed with the harbour – not to mention the splendid
sea food lunch, supplemented by quality Australian wine!
HOST ORGANISING COMMITTEE
PP Lindsay May and his technology team have
plans in hand for an excellent web site facility by

However, every possible piece of Convention
information – from bookings for shows to
transport arrangements and weather information
for travellers – will be available via the web.

The big challenge for the HOC is finding sufficient
volunteers for the many tasks associated with a
Convention. From welcome parties at the various
airports to guides around the Sydney Olympic Park
venue, hundreds of volunteers will be required.
PDG Monica Saville and her committee are
already working diligently to prepare lists via the
web site – www.rotary2014.com.au – not to
mention the logistic challenges involved with
provision of uniforms, bottled water and

arrangements for the Sydney Convention. She is
working with appropriate officials in Canberra but

is that it can take SIX MONTHS for visa approval in

The HIM promotional book was first
produced by PDG Tony Castley as a public image
exercise during his gubernatorial year in
2008/09. It has been acclaimed as the perfect
promotional resource and HIM 2 has now sold
almost 25,000 copies in the last two years.
District Governors and Governors Nominee
across Australia have already thrown their
support behind the project. Design work has
already commenced and collection of QUALITY
editorial and pictorial material from every
Australian District will start shortly.
The HOC plans to place one copy of the book
in EVERY Convention satchel – as a major public
relations exercise for Australian Rotary.
Public relations and convention publicity are
in the hands of PDG Bob Aitken ‐
Sydney 2014 RI Convention Host Organising
Committee plans to publish a Convention
Newsletter – The Corroboree – at regular intervals
between now and the staging of our Convention
from June 1 – 4, 2014, and distribute same around
the world commencing with the June edition at
the Lisbon Convention.
However, protocol demands that the HOC
contains promotion to Districts within our region
at this time so this edition – and one further
edition in May – will have restricted ‘regional’
circulation. This is to ensure clubs and Rotarians
are ‘up to speed’ with Convention plans and

Rotarians and Rotary Clubs regularly.
