Since the earthquake and massive
typhoon that struck the Philippines last
year, Disaster Aid Australia’s work in the
area continues. We have been assisted
by our own volunteer Disaster Aid
Response Team Members (DARTs), such
as Christine Cassar, who is completing a
PhD in conflict resolution at Manchester
University UK on a Rotary scholarship.
Working with the local community,
Christine and other DARTs quickly
learned that the most effective way
of helping after these unprecedented
disasters, was to find out what was
most needed, then act. And we did,
providing hundreds of Home Repair
Kits and working cooperatively with
local people, Rotarians, NGOs (such
as Balay Mindanow Foundation) and
It also became increasingly evident
that potable water is a vital need
throughout the Philippines. So we
shipped many units of the Australian-
designed SkyHydrantTM that, once
set up, each produce 10,000 litres of
drinking water a day for many years.
One of our DARTs trained locals on
how to use this life-saving equipment.
Last month, a team from Balay
Mindanaw was in Australia for a two-
day training course on the installation
of the SkyHydrantTM water purification
system. And they have taken up the
challenge by Disaster Aid International
Chairman David Langworthy, of the
Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills, Vic,
when he visited the Philippines earlier
this year to “ensure every child in the
country has clean drinking water”.
Disaster Aid Australia continues
to provide assistance to those in
need and to look beyond immediate
disaster relief and work to rebuild
communities and lives.
Your ongoing support is needed so
this vital work can continue. And that
includes volunteering to be a partner
club. Please contact us on 1300 881 913

Each year on January 26, Australians
join together, fly our flag and
celebrate our lucky country.
In Western Australia, it was also
a day for District 9455 to celebrate
a number of their fellow Rotarians
who made the Australia Day
Robert Symington, of the Rotary
Club of Geraldton, took out the
Premier ’s 2014 Australia Day Active
Citizenship Award for Geraldton.
Bob is one of the many organisers/
soldiers of the club’s annual
Geraldton Rotary Radio Auction,
which raises much-needed funds
for community groups. In 2013
he was presented with Rotarian of
the Year and is a dedicated and
valued member of the club who is
passionate about giving back and
helping “make a difference”.
Further north, the Mossman
Park Men’s Shed, a major project
of the Rotary Club of Mossman
Park, received a Community Service
Award, while club member Alex Beerli
received an Active Citizenship Award
for Junior Citizen of the year for her
work on the Junior Advisory Council.
A number of community markets
were also recognised for their
contribution to the wider community.
The Rotary Club of Karrinyup won
an award for their Stirling Farmers
Market project, which aims to provide
farm fresh produce direct from the
grower or producer to local residents.
A free “community” stall is
provided to charities and various
not-for-profit groups each week
where they can increase awareness
of their cause, provide information
or raise funds.
Closer to Perth, the Rotary Club
of Swan Valley was recognised for
its Old Perth Road Markets, run
in conjunction with the town. The
partnership is testament to the
dedication from what is considered
the most professional volunteer
organisation in the region.
An average market consists of
around 60 individual stalls, which
can vary from hobbyists, micro-
businesses, government agencies
and even political organisations.
The markets have been held
monthly since August 2010
generating close to $90,000, of
which 100 per cent goes to charity
and community groups.
Congratulations to all the hard-
working WA Rotarians!
