THIS ROTARY WORLD
Thanks to the Rotary Family
Following the tragic
death of her husband,
Jean Grosse found
solace in the “Rotary
Family” of the Rotary
Club of Lindisfarne,
Tas. Here she thanks
them for helping her
through this difficult
time in her life.
Had it not been
for Rotary I would not be writing this article now or
maybe even have made it through these past few difficult
months of my life. This is now my way of saying thank
you to Rotary in Tasmania and in particular to the Rotary
Club of Lindisfarne.
I had seen the care of this Rotary Family as they helped
me get my husband, Cliff Grosse, through his three years
of cancer treatment and heart surgery. We were all so
thrilled when he was declared well again and ready to
enjoy the rest of our life together.
It was not to be. The “so glad to be fit again” gave Cliff
a new verve for living, but he took one risk too many
when he climbed on the roof to fix a leaking gutter on
a rainy morning. A ladder, a wet roof, 76-year-old knees
held by slippery shoes and down he went. There was no
sound – just the crash of a window being broken by the
Cliff fell from the roof at 10 in the morning and by
seven that night he was declared dead.
I will never forget the immediate response of the
Lindisfarne Rotarian Family, once my sons had let the club
know why Cliff would not be attending the meeting. They
not only prepared a lively tribute to Cliff in that week’s
Bulletin, but also coordinated a continuing heart-warming
embrace of care for me and my family – many of whom
travelled from interstate to support me and farewell Cliff.
The tasks they undertook were varied and many – those
which one Rotarian or partner could not do was managed
by another or yet another. It began on the Wednesday
when a couple of Rotarians visited us and checked with
my family how they could help. They then began what
became a continual delivery of home-cooked food to
sustain us through our grief and pain in that first awful
month. I had the comfort of knowing that the Rotary
Family was there for me, willingly and without fanfare
doing all manner of tasks that have made life a little
easier. Some months later I still get regular calls and
ongoing visits to keep me in contact with the club.
Rotary has been a central part of our life since Cliff
Then Rotary International president Ron Burton
was the special guest speaker for the Rotary
E-Club of 9920 Francophone on April 15, using
GoToMeeting video conference technology to
reach as many Rotary members as possible.
“E-clubs are blazing a trail and can be a
tremendous opportunity to meet people from
around the world,” Ron commented.
He announced that, after several years of no
growth, the number of Rotarians was beginning
to increase again. The 135 new e-clubs formed
since 2010 is probably one of the causes of this
increase. He encouraged e-clubs, as well as clubs
worldwide, to ask Rotaractors to join.
Forty-nine participants from 35 Rotary clubs and
two Rotaract clubs in 30 districts spanning five
continents joined president Jean Louis Nguyen Qui
at his French-speaking e-club meeting in English
that day or night, depending on their time zone.
Former governor Beryl Robinson spoke on behalf
of host district 9920 and then president elect
Dyann Calverly from sister club Botany East Tamaki,
NZ, was also online at 2.30am.
This milestone event showed that a Rotary
e-club is not as “virtual” a club as some people
might think, and that a Rotary e-club can, just as
a “classical” Rotary club can, improve fellowship
between Rotarians and work together proactively
to help the community wherever that may be.

the Rotary Family. The Rotary Foundation may be the
recognised outward reach of the organisation, but via
the auspices of the Lindisfarne club members, I have
experienced the power and love of the inner reach of the
Thank you Rotary. Cliff would have been proud of you
all. The generous support I have received has enabled me
to get back on my feet and tackle life anew.
